Born to Methodist parents, Catherine Mumford Booth (1829-1890) married Methodist preacher William Booth in 1855. Four years later, she wrote the pamphlet featured here to defend the ministry of Phoebe Palmer – and women in general.  She did not begin preaching herself until 1860, shortly after giving birth to her fourth child. (The Booths had eight children.)  Mrs. Booth is known as the co-founder with her husband, General William Booth. She has also been called the “Mother of The Salvation Army”.
